The 19th Frontier Forum for Digital Technology and Finance was Successfully Held

On November 21, 2023, at 8:00 am, the 19th Forum on Digital Technology and Economic Finance Frontiers was successfully held. The theme of this lecture was "Three Cases of Machine Learning Principles and Empirical Applications in Economics", and the keynote speaker was Professor Feng Guo, Executive Director of the School of Public Economics and Management and the Laboratory of Digital and Real Integration and Intelligent Governance at Shanghai University of Finance and Economics. The lecture was chaired by Professor Yongbin Lv, Vice Dean of the Finance School and Deputy Director of the Innovation and Talent Base for Digital Technology and Finance. All graduate students and researchers of the School of Finance attended the lecture.

At the beginning of the lecture, Professor Yongbin Lv briefly introduced Professor Feng Guo's relevant information to the participants and expressed his heartfelt gratitude to him for taking the time to give a lecture at our university.

During the lecture, Professor Feng Guo discussed the basic concepts and principles of machine learning through three empirical papers in economics, and discussed how to apply machine learning methods to empirical research in social sciences represented by economics.

Finally, the participants had active academic exchanges with Professor Feng Guo, who provided detailed answers to the questions and puzzles of the teachers and students. Professor Yongbin Lv expressed his gratitude to Professor Feng Guo for his speech, and the forum came to a successful conclusion.


Speaker Introduction

Feng Guo is a professor and head of the Investment Department in the School of Public Economics and Management, Shanghai University of Finance and Economics. He is also the executive director of the Digital-Physical Integration and Intelligent Governance Laboratory, vice president of the Fogrow ESG Research Institute, and a senior research fellow at the Digital Finance Research Center of Peking University. His research areas include digital economy and digital finance, machine learning and big data analysis, public economics, etc. He has published over 50 papers in both Chinese and English academic journals such as "Economic Research" (2), "Management World" (3), "China Economic Review", "Journal of Economic Behavior & Organization", and "Research Policy". Eleven of his papers have a citation rate of over 100, and two of them have a citation rate of over 1000, which are two of the top 5 most-cited papers since the inception of "China Economic Review". He has also published over 90 economic commentaries in mainstream media and authored three academic monographs. He has led more than 10 research projects including the National Social Science Fund for Youth, Shanghai Philosophy and Social Science Planning Projects, and National Science Foundation for Postdoctoral Science.


Frontier Forum for Digital Technology and Finance introduction

Recent years have witnessed a dramatic acceleration in a digital revolution in economic sectors and a rapid adoption of the new generation of information technologies, such as artificial intelligence, blockchain, cloud computing, big data, etc. These technologies effectively set off the digital economy. It has become a key driving force in creating global economic growth, improving the modernization level of governance capabilities, and promoting high-quality economic development in China. In particular, digital finance is the most important part of the digital economy. To explore the development direction of the cross-integration of digital technology and finance, the Innovation and Talent Base for Digital Technology and Finance is hosting the “Frontier Forum for Digital Technology and Finance”, in collaboration with the School of Finance, Wenlan School of Business, Economics School, School of Information and Safety Engineering, School of Statistics and Mathematics, School of Public Finance and Taxation of Zhongnan University of Economics and Law (ZUEL). This lecture series will invite the well-known scholars at home and abroad in digital technology, digital economy, digital finance, and other related fields as guest speakers, providing an open and cutting-edge academic exchange platform for interdisciplinary research on digital technology and finance.
